Position Summary

 

This role utilizes scrum best practices to drive productivity within their team and the other product teams. They elevate the role of the Scrum Master by consistently improving velocity, contributing to product results, and inspiring the team by promoting a healthy team dynamic and furthering individual professional development goals. The Senior Scrum Master is a change agent - changing the beliefs, values and team behaviors through the adoption of an agile mindset. This role acts as an agile subject matter expert, and not only understands how to “do” agile, but how to “be” agile. This role requires demonstrating an understanding of both technology and business need. Senior Scrum Masters should be able to act as Scrum Master on multiple mature teams effectively, demonstrate advanced problem-solving abilities and be able to integrate onto new teams quickly.

Work with dedicated scrum team

  • Increases agile team productivity
    • Proactively searches for impediments utilizing advanced understanding of user stories, and promotes transparency in making them visible to the team
    • Engages with other Scrum Masters to identify and resolve cross-team impediments or make progress on external dependencies
    • Analyzes data to identify team patterns and uses that information to guide the team forward
    • Helps team build strong relationships
    • Surfaces and implements process improvements
    • Empowers the team to self-organize
    • Protects the team from outside distractions and over-commitment
  • Contributes to product outcomes and strategy
    • Understands high-level product strategy and vision and helps junior team members with their understanding
    • Provides the Product Owner with input into the backlog prioritization
  • Coaches the Product Owner on creating user stories from the product roadmap, utilizing understanding of the link between the business value and the technology
  • Coaches and empowers the team
    • Mediates conflict between team members and the team and the Product Owner
    • Motivates team by making their progress and contributions visible in creative ways
    • Inspires team by helping them understand their existing impact and potential to impact further
    • Promotes progress to the leadership team and celebrates successes
    • Coaches the team on the agile methodology and scrum framework
  • Creates culture of transparency by making the work visible; Helps others visualize progress through tracking and explaining velocity, happiness, and sprint/release progress to all affected teams and management
  • Holds the team accountable; ensures people adhere to the definition of done
  • Demonstrates situational awareness by noticing potential issues as they arise, coaching the team to resolve internally, and involving management if necessary
  • Integrate outside vendors into team effectively by identifying and facilitating knowledge sharing and professional development opportunities, and making recommendation on how best to assimilate based on cultural fit and knowledge of situation
  • Facilitate the appropriate scrum events to be purposeful and effective, providing clear boundaries in which the team can collaborate; facilitate continuous improvement of the process
    • From retrospective, identify kaizen and measurable steps to remediate

 

Agile champion and thought partner

  • Evolve Bain’s implementation of scrum and directly contribute to its continuous improvement
    • Drive experience sharing within the TSG Agile CoE
    • Introduce new techniques that improve Bain’s application of scrum
  • Leads sharing of scrum best practices across the organization using knowledge of industry (test driven development, continuous integration, pair programming, automated testing, design thinking workshops, etc.) and internal best practices
    • Coaches other scrum teams on the most effective implementation of scrum principles and practices
    • Initiates best practices of scrum across all product teams
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Minimum 5-7 years of business experience, minimum 4 years of experience acting as a Scrum Master
  • Bachelor’s degree in an IT or Business related field
  • Certified Scrum Master
  • Advanced CSM or Agile Coach certification and Knowledge of Agile project management tools (Jira, Retrium, Microsoft Azure DevOps, etc) will be preferred
    Experience leading others and Project Management experience will be preferred
  • Deep understanding of Agile development processes and methodology
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
    • Ability to help Product Owners formulate/articulate a decision on the course of action and communicate that message to all levels of organization
    • Ability to communicate well with Agile thought leaders internally and externally
    • Ability to coach the team (and individuals) to work together to reach their highest potential; able to have courageous crucial conversations when necessary
    • Strong conflict resolution skills
    • Ability to understand and communicate the link between the business outcome and the technology
